The ots'in (Gitxsanimax for "Spirit-life-force-essence of the Gitxsan") of former students linger at this far-away Edmonton Indian Residential School. How many just-kids took the brunt of Canada's & the churches' pre-meditated 120 year campaign "to kill the Indian in the child" behind these red brick walls? Idk. I estimate between 1940-1980: 1560>=2600 as young as 5 yo, jailed <= 13 years. Cultural genocide. Reconcile that! I heard this quite awhile ago: "Walk on, walk on the breath of our Grandfathers." Also, I heard the breath of Canada & the churches at the Edmonton IndResSch. Consequently, many survivors fell on their own swords. Forgiveness is pree intelligent, not that Canada nor the churches deserve it but that survivors deserve peace. This is a fantastic lesson plan on genocides in history that incorporates Common Core strategies, cooperative learning, and higher-level thinking. Includes 6 one page readings on genocides (the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, Stalin's Great Purge, Cambodia, Rwanda, and Darfur) along with a chart. Students then analyze the UN definition of genocide and work together to create a new one and apply it to one of the genocides they read about.
