Matthew Henson (August 8, 1866 - March 9, 1955) is reputedly the first non-Inuit to set foot on the North Pole, 45 minutes ahead of expedition leader Robert Peary whom Henson served for 23 years as navigator, craftsman, and interpreter. Henson received little recognition at the time and worked the next 30 years as a customs clerk in New York City. He was recognized by Congress in 1944 and in 1988 was reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery. #TodayInBlackHistory
