Ritchie Valens 1941 – 1959 was a Mexican-American singer, songwriter and guitarist. A completely self-taught musician, he often improvised new lyrics and added new riffs to popular songs while he was playing. This is an aspect of his music that is not heard in his commercial studio recordings.

Ritchie Valens died in the plane crash that also took Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, but we'll remember him for La Bamba.

Feb 03, 1959.... rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff from Mason City on a flight headed for Moorehead, Minnesota.
