Doss was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, son of William Thomas Doss, a carpenter, and Bertha E. Desmond Doss enlisted in April but refused to kill or carry a weapon into combat because of his personal beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist.

Desmond learned this knot by mistake during training when he was practicing a Bowline Knot (he tied it wrong and ended up with two loops instead of one).
