A new study redefines the role of the Broca's area.

The brain's speech area, named after century French physician Pierre Paul Broca, shuts down when we talk out loud, according to a new study that challenges the long-held assumption that 'Broca's area' governs all aspects of speech production.

Wernike and Broca areas are the two language areas of the brain. Wernike is involved with recognition and plan of speech and broca generates motor signals to the primary cortex to physically speak. If the broca area is injured/there is a lesion, it is called nonfluent aphasia, or that there is slow speech with difficulty to choose words. If there is an injury/lesion to Wernike, it is called fluent aphasia. Fluent aphasia is when speech is normal and excessive, but makes little sense.

Aphasia is caused by localized brain damage, e. by a stroke.

Language Areas of the brain. The Angular Gyrus is represented in orange, Supramarginal Gyrus is represented in yellow, Broca's area is represented in blue, Wernicke's area is represented in green, and the Primary Auditory Cortex is represented in pink.

This is responsible for speech development, damage to this causes speech disorders such as apraxia of speech.
