The library is by some sources mentioned as the first in all of the Americas. Juan de Palafox y Mendoza was very fond of books and the library contains more than 40000 pieces.

The Biblioteca Palafoxiana owes its name and foundation to Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, bishop of Puebla.
