Rarely growing larger than a foot (30 centimeters) in length, the Axolotl is one of nature’s smaller amazing bundles. A critically endangered species in their native Mexico, these amphibians are a species of salamander that never undergoes metamorphosis and therefore remains gilled and aquatic for its entire life.

The Axolotl also known as a Mexican salamander or a Mexican walking fish, is a neotenic salamander, closely related to the tiger salamander. Although the axolotl is colloquially known as a "walking fish", it is not a fish, but an amphibian

Salamanders, like this mud salamander, grow up the same way frogs and toads do. They hatch from eggs and emerge as larvae that look a lot like tadpoles.
