Treating, priming and painting can be a time-consuming process, but it’s important to do it correctly to minimise wear in the long run. If you are painting on to bare wood you should apply an oil-based primer — ideally two coats given a light sanding in between. Primer works to hide stains and prevent discolouration. Once it is dry, use an oil-based undercoat in an appropriate shade to complement your final colour and follow it with two layers of topcoat. HIT THE LINK FOR THE FULL GUIDE.
