The Woolston ferry, or floating bridge. This contraption reliably hauled itself and its cargo of cars, bicycles and foot passengers across the River Itchen, using two steel cables. The service was decommisioned in 1977, so all of my memories of the floating bridge are childhood ones. Every routine trip from Woolston to Southampton was a wonderful adventure...
