Les Banos was the long-time team photographer for the Pittsburgh Pirates. A retrospective of his work from the early 1970s focusing on the great Roberto Clemente is going on at the Pittsburgh Regional History Center. I think the photos there were amazing and I focused on this one because Bill Mazeroski (on the left) was my mom's all-time favorite player while Roberto (on the right) was mine. Arribe Arribe. Bob Moose: my very first baseball card in 1974, playing for my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates; born 10/9/47...died 10/9/76; came closest of anyone to pitching no-hitter at Forbes Field (1968); Pirate rookie of the year 1968; pitched a no-hitter vs Mets 1969; led league in winning pct 1969; 1971 world series champ; threw wild pitch in October 1972 playoff game; led Pirates in saves in 1976. The Puerto Rican star's abilities as a player — his sensational throwing, his acrobatic fielding, his relentless hitting (.317 lifetime average) — overpowered the prejudice against Latin American players.
