Drawing of the ram pump that Tristan drew and built in Lost in Temptation--a view of the outside. This picture was scanned from a hand-colored engraving in an 1821 copy of the popular magazine Ackermann's Repository. The accompanying text included instructions on how to build a ram pump, calling it, "A simple Hydraulic Engine, which will raise Water to a very considerable elevation, without manual force or assistance." The ram pump was invented by a Frenchman, Joseph-Michel Montgolfier, in 1796.
