Puffins
Sunday Snapshot: Icelandic Puffin Caught on Lunch - Mapping Megan
The puffin is one of Iceland’s biggest wildlife draws. They arrive by the million for the breeding season between April and August, and nest on coastal cliffs all around the country in massive colonies. To say that they arrive in the million is no understatement - we literally spent days shooting puffin photography, though we did occasionally allow them to break for lunch! Head to Tjörnes for the best site to spot puffins in Iceland.

Black legged Kittiwake
Black Legged Kittiwake Biography A pelagic gull, this kittiwake spends most of the year at sea. The Black-legged Kittiwakes gather in areas of upwellings, sometimes over the edge of the continental shelf. They can be found from the coast to over a hundred miles offshore. They breed on narrow cliff ledges in the far north. Black-legged Kittiwakes are surface feeders, dropping from flight to take items off the surface of the water, or plunging into the water for prey just below the surface…
"The Dive for Life" - Atlantic Puffin Style
Last, but not least, my third favorite shot from my recent Atlantic Puffin shooting in Newfoundland, Canada. Hopefully once you read the story you will appreciate the image, and the name, even more. Puffins spend most of their lives at sea and only return to land to mate and raise their young. During these summer "puffin-stock love fests" they usually nest on small soil-topped sea stacks and/or islands, safely away from potential predators (such as fox). Even with the safety of water all…

Little brother of the North
A colourful puffin is spotted on our Spitsbergen Explorer Expedition. It's name is derived from it's Latin genus name Fratercula which roughly translates to "Little Brother of the North." Aww!
