shading with black can actually give something kind of retro effect. you can shade with black if you want a certain effect like with comic book art, but in general it doesn't look realistic so if you're going for realism, i don't recommend. and honestly, this tip is very simplistic. if you use your colour wheel and want a bit of contrast, i'd use a little bit of the opposite colour to boost the richness of it
