Lord Dalhousie (1900). John Singer Sargent. Oil on canvas. 101.6 x 152.4 cm. Private collection
James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie (1812-1860), styled Lord Ramsay until 1838 & known as The Earl of Dalhousie between 1838 & 1849, was a Scottish statesman, & a colonial administrator in British India. He served as Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856. The most controversial & tainted 'reform' developed & implemented under Dalhousie was the policy of taking all legal (often illegal too) means possible to assume control over “lapsed” states.
