catching up with some school visits: Augusta Baker's Dozen Storytelling Celebration

And then, back in April, I was in Columbia, SC where southern hospitality was on display the moment I stepped in to my hotel room: Hey, notice what that basket is on? Yes, that was me and my work on wall those posters and postcards and magazine covers: Because, I was featured author for the Augusta Baker's Dozen: A Celebration of Stories, an amazing program in its 29th year. oh, did I mention, they also made buttons? My favorite part of the program is that on one of the days, they bus in 4th…

Belated Hong Kong post: Sights to see!

Hong Kong definitely has many great tourist sights. However, for me as a visiting author, the Hong Kong International School had the best things to see! First, there were the bulletin boards: a dragon welcome! an I Spy Grace Lin board! Covered with items mentioned in my books! papers of happiness! Students wrote what they thought would be on the paper that flew away this one said smile! And then there were the lovely students! One girl made a "Dumpling Days" hat which she wore for hat day…

Here is another school visit I did, all the way back in April! This one was in Slingerlands, NY where they did a One Book, One School Read (my favorite thing!) of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon: Why do I love visiting schools that do this so much? Well, because the kids there are so awesome: Of course, they are taught to be so awesome by their amazing teachers and librarians who take my little book and turn it into a school-wide opportunity for learning and community building. For…

Belated Post: Visiting the Eastern Shore in Maryland

In April, I was also fortunate to spend a week in Maryland, visiting schools and libraries on the Eastern Shore. I was happy to go as I last year I had to drop out as I got a little busy--needless to say, I'm was very glad to be reinvited! And it was a fun week! Hosted by famous blogger librarians Sam and Rachel, we enjoyed all the warm welcomes: One school welcomed me with a quilt inspired by the descriptive language from Where the Mountain Meets the Moon: Here's a better picture of it…

catching up with some school visits: One Book, One Read in TX!

Another great visit I don't want to forget was in Houston, TX, where two schools chose Where the Mountain Meets the Moon as their One Book, One School Read title. Can I tell you how much I LOVE when schools do this? It's my absolute favorite thing when a whole school reads my book. I admit I get a bit disheartened when Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is pigeon-holed as "ethnic," but when it's used for programs such as these my faith is restored. Because, I truly believe that my books are…
