For the Love of Art
I usually don't post personal stuff, but I just had to share my new little guy with y'all! His name is Tommy. Yep, that's right- Tommy Thomas :). We adopted him from a shelter and he was named that already, and it just suited him, so we kept it. He is 9 weeks old. His mom was a boxer, and his dad, an american bulldog. My hubs and I have been searching for the perfect pup for over a year now, and well- we found him! He is just the sweetest! We had to get to the shelter at 3am to get in line…
Klee's Castles, 2nd grade
Paul Klee's "Castle and Sun" was our jumping off piece for this lesson - thanks to this blog, arteascuola, for the idea (and several others I pinned from you)! Castles were great subjects to be drawn on book pages, since so many stories are set around a castle. I have been collecting damaged books for upcycling, and the second graders were excited to use Harry Potter pages for this lesson. Students made 3 compositional choices: page layout, type of balance (symmetrical or asymmetrical) and…

Warm/Cool Watercolour Grid
This is a watercolour project I recently taught to a Grade 8 class. It is useful for reviewing warm and cool colours as well as for learning how to use watercolours in a controlled way. Here's how we made these: First, students measured a grid onto their white paper- I think I encouraged a 3cm size square, but to accomodate students who need more help, they can use a larger size. Some students chose to go smaller. So measure out the lines with a ruler in one direction.... Then the same size…

1st Grade, Paul Klee Project
I LOVE blogging because it is a great way to share project ideas. I found this awesome lesson on Use Your Colored Pencils. This project was based after Paul Klee's painting, The Castle and The Sun. It also just happened to fit perfectly into the curriculum right now because my students have been studying shapes in math class. To begin this project, I gave each child two triangles. I then challenged them to figure out how to use these two triangles to make a square. Most of my students…

You can do Observational Drawing in Kindergarten! - The Art of Education University
I rarely try new lessons with kindergarten. It freaks me out. I like to stick with what I know and what works well because sometimes that is just how I am! Plus, I’ve spent years getting my kindergarten curriculum to where I want it and like it. But this year, I tried a new lesson […]
