Elm Tree

Nebraska designated the cottonwood (Populus deltoides) as the official state tree in 1972, replacing the original choice of 1937 - the American elm.

Massachusetts designated the American elm (Ulmus americana) as the official state tree in 1941; the American elm tree has been severely afflicted by elm disease.

Among the most characteristically English trees, the Elm tree has dubious claims to an existence in England prior to the Roman occupation. The name is slightly altered from the Latin ulmus.
