The design of chandeliers and their arms became increasingly elaborate after the mid-18th century, limited in their width only by the poor tensile strength of the material. The best examples are equally impressive by daylight, and many survive in their original settings. This chandelier (c1770-74) can be seen in the Red Drawing Room at Uppark, West Sussex.
