Many lobules make up the thymus gland. Most of the lymphocytes in the cortex are immature, rapidly dividing cells that can readily be destroyed by cortisone. During maturation, they move to the medulla, where they become immunocompetent and resistant to cortisone. From there, they migrate to the secondary lymphoid organs, including the lymph nodes and the spleen.
