Princess Alice was the first of Queen Victoria's children to die. She passed away in 1878, on the 14th December (the anniversary of her father's death). She was, at that point, the Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. Queen Victoria presented framed photos of her daughter to all her staff as Christmas gifts, in what was a very subdued Christmas season.

In April 1857, Caldesi was invited to Buckingham Palace to photograph the royal children. This was the first of several successful commissions in 1857, which included a visit to Osborne House in May with his business partner Mattia Montecchi.
