Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom) was built by Emperor Constantine in 360 but it partially burnt down in 404. Emperor Theodosius restored the building in 415. When it burnt down once again in 532, Emperor Justinian I had it rebuilt in stone. After 5 years of construction, Sophia was reopened to Christian worship in 537. After 1,100 years as a Christian cathedral, in 1453 Ottomans turned Sophia into a mosque by desecrating its exquisite mosaics. The West was able to restore a few of them in the 1930s.
